KAT Explodes, Refs Botch Calls, But Finch Says Wolves Choked: A Tale of Two Halves

On Monday, NBA fans witnessed a stunning performance from Karl-Anthony Towns, who exploded against the Charlotte Hornets, scoring a record-breaking 44 points in the first half. But Towns' magic came to an abrupt end after halftime, and the Timberwolves were embarrassed to lose 128-125 after leading by double digits.

Despite the lopsided final score, controversy ensued. With 11.9 seconds left in the game and the Hornets leading 126-125, KAT received the ball at the top of the key with only Terry Rozier defending him. He spun and pushed forward, but was met by four defenders. As he tried to hit the tying shot, he was hit on the left hand by Rozier and then again by Leaky Black. There was no whistle.

Adding fuel to the fire, the NBA's report on Tuesday's final two minutes confirmed what many had suspected: 10 missed calls, including two key fouls on Towns' late-game drive. The X (the predecessor to Twitter) exploded, with some claiming that the NBA was rigged.

Towns' first-half firepower wasn't enough. He contributed 14 more points in the third quarter to push the Timberwolves' lead to 107-94, but Charlotte went on a 36-18 run in the fourth quarter to steal the win.

The Hornets' plan? Simple: suffocate Towns and hope he calms down. According to the league, with the help of a missed call, that plan worked.

But Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch refused to blame the refs. He took his anger out on his players, calling their performance "immature" and disrespectful to the game and themselves. He claimed they "deserved it", slammed their defence and claimed they played "immature" basketball from the start.

Finch probably won't even look at the last two minutes of the report. He publicly rebuked his players and will likely continue to deal with their disgraceful performance internally.

This game was a tale of two halves: a record-breaking performance by Towns followed by a collective Timberwolves meltdown. While the missed call added a spicy layer to the story, Finch's point was clear: the Timberwolves screwed up, and the blame lies squarely on their shoulders.
